ANSI Z136.1 laser safety — what a U.S. shop must have in place
Industrial fiber laser cutting, welding, cleaning and marking systems are normally Class 4 devices. Under ANSI Z136.1 (current edition Z136.1-2022), an organization operating Class 3B or Class 4 lasers is expected to designate a Laser Safety Officer, maintain a documented laser safety program, and establish a Laser Controlled Area at each point of use. Everyone inside that area needs laser safety eyewear rated for the specific wavelength and optical density of the machine — general safety glasses do not qualify — plus appropriate gloves, flame-resistant clothing and warning signage visible outside and inside the area.
