Single-Phase vs Three-Phase Fiber Laser

Single-phase capability belongs to a specific engineered build

A low-power fiber laser can sometimes be configured for a 220–240V single-phase facility, but the approval applies only to the exact machine, source, chiller, conversion package, compressor, extraction and total connected load. It should not be generalized to every machine with the same advertised power.

Single-phase can fit when

  • The facility has no 3-phase service but has sufficient measured voltage, panel capacity and available amperage.
  • The selected laser and support equipment are specifically engineered and approved for the package.
  • The duty cycle, compressor strategy and future expansion remain within the facility plan.
  • A licensed electrician reviews the disconnect, breaker, conductors, grounding and local code requirements.

Three-phase is normally better when

  • The machine is 6kW or higher, multi-shift, enclosed, exchange-table, automated or paired with large support equipment.
  • The shop expects future higher-power machines, compressors, extraction or nitrogen generation.
  • Electrical efficiency, motor operation, load distribution and industrial serviceability matter.

Compare total facility cost

The lowest machine price may not produce the lowest project cost. Compare utility upgrades, transformer or conversion package, compressor, conductor distance, panel work, demand charges, maintenance, production limitations and future expansion. Obtain a written load schedule for the machine and all support equipment before ordering.
