Press Brake Selection by Material Gauge & Bend Length

Connect the production requirement to the right machine family, exact configuration, facility plan, delivery scope, ownership path, and technical resources.

Gauge and length are only two inputs in the bending calculation

Press-brake selection must also include material tensile strength, V-opening, bending method, target inside radius, minimum flange, tooling rating, daylight, stroke, throat, frame clearance, axes and production mix.

Build the bend matrix

  • List every material grade and thickness.
  • Identify the longest bend at each thickness, not only the longest part.
  • Record the shortest flange, return flange, box depth and target inside radius.
  • Select the proposed V-opening and bending method.
  • Calculate the worst line load and confirm punch, die, holder, clamping and machine capacity.

Short bends and full-length bends

A machine can bend a thicker short bracket while lacking force for the same thickness across the full bed. Conversely, a long high-tonnage machine may be unnecessary when nearly all parts are short.

Geometry can govern before tonnage

Throat, daylight, stroke, frame clearance, backgauge range and tooling access can make a part impossible even when sufficient force exists.

Submit a material and bend matrix.
