Rust and paint are different removal applications
Rust can vary from light surface oxidation to heavy scale and pitting. Paint can vary by chemistry, thickness, layers, adhesion and hazardous ingredients. The accepted substrate condition and production rate should be defined separately.
Rust review
- Light oxide, heavy scale, pitting, moisture, oil and substrate condition.
- Required bare-metal finish, roughness and whether remaining pits are acceptable.
- Area, geometry, corners, welds, access and follow-up coating.
Paint review
- Paint type, number of layers, thickness, age, primer and adhesion.
- SDS, lead, chromium or other hazardous content.
- Allowed heat, discoloration, surface texture and residue.
- Extraction, filter, fire, waste and worker-exposure controls.
Process selection
Pulsed and CW systems should be compared by actual surface result and rate. Multiple passes, scan width, power, standoff, temperature and substrate effect must be recorded.
