Machines, applications, and planning

Industrial Laser Safety Planning

Connect the production requirement to the right machine family, exact configuration, facility plan, delivery scope, ownership path, and technical resources.

Class 4 laser equipment requires a site-specific safety program

Open fiber lasers, handheld laser welders and cleaners can create hazardous direct, reflected and scattered radiation as well as fumes, fire, electrical, gas and mechanical risks. The employer and site Laser Safety Officer must develop the program for the exact equipment and application.

Program elements

  • Hazard classification, wavelength, power, beam path, nominal hazard zone and risk assessment.
  • Enclosure or wavelength-rated barriers, viewing windows, access control, interlocks, key control and signage.
  • Correct protective eyewear optical density and coverage for the wavelength and exposure; eyewear is the last line of defense.
  • Training, authorization, supervision, operating procedure, alignment restrictions and incident response.
  • Fume extraction, respiratory review, fire watch, combustible control, reflective materials and hot-work coordination.
  • Electrical safety, gas cylinders, compressed air, workholding, housekeeping and lockout/tagout.

Do not rely on marketing labels

A supplied enclosure, curtain or eyewear does not automatically establish site compliance. Verify material rating, seams, gaps, doors, windows, interlocks, reflections, process position and maintenance. Never bypass safety devices.

Application and capacity

Define material, geometry, thickness or capacity, production volume, quality, workflow, and future work.

Machine and facility

Compare configuration, controller, options, utilities, extraction, footprint, access, unloading, and placement.

Ownership and support

Confirm price path, delivery, startup, training, warranty, service, parts, financing, rental, used, or trade-in options.
